Beat: Kid Famous Interview

Posted by: admin in Untagged  on

By Diana Orbegozo

The "screw face capital" - this once negative term was used to associate Toronto with the idea that its music community has a bad attitude when it comes to giving support to artists.  Well, now T.dot’s music listener are proudly embracing the term, crowning themselves as a tough audience.  Only the best make the grade in the city and hip-hop fans in particular will only give props and daps to the artists they think have real skill and originality.

So what does that mean for the city’s homegrown artists? Does it drive them to be better, or limit their success? We have less than a handful of acts that seem to be ‘making-it’ so it seems the Susie-choosy attitude might not be the best thing for our music scene.

I decided to speak to a local rap artist to get some insight on the changes that have been happening in Toronto. Ashton Bishop, a local rap artist who goes by the name Kid Famous (or just Famous), was able to share some of his time to answer a few questions.

Beat: Heavy MTL Tickets onsale tomorrow

Posted by: admin in Untagged  on

Montreal-dwelling slaves to the goat should start waiting by their computers, hands poised on their mouse, because tickets to the two-day metal festival Heavy MTL will be on sale tomorrow, March 6. The second edition of the annual fest will take place on July . The 2008 lineup included genre heavyweights Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Voivod, Anthrax, Overkill, Priestess and cartoon metallers Dethklok. The festival skipped a year, leaving the city starved of long hair and flying V's, but will be returning July 24-25 to steep the city in a pool of satan.

Beat: Gordon Lightfood x Twitter Hoax

Posted by: admin in Untagged  on

Contrary to the rumours that had been flying around the internet earlier this week, legendary Canadian folk rocker Gordon Lightfoot is not dead. The 71-year-old Orillia, On, native is alive and well. The singer's death, initially reported by The National Post, The Ottawa Citizen and The Calgary Herald,  was revealed to be a hoax this afternoon by Lightfoot himself, who called into Toronto News Station CP24, joking "I haven't got that much airplay in two weeks." The seeds of the prank were apparently planted by an Ottawa Twitterer.

We at Naked Eye think it's a shame that such an important Canadian icon needs to be pronounced dead to be heard on the air, so we're taking a couple of minutes out of our date to bask in the glorious chords of this (thankfully still living) minstrel of the dawn.

Screen: "How To Make It In America" Pilot x HBO Canada

Posted by: admin in Untagged  on

In case you missed the premiere on tv last weekend, the kind folks at HBO Canada have made the first episode of the new series How To Make It In America available for streaming. The show, which lists Mark Wahlberg among its executive producers, follows a bunch of aging bohemians hustling in New York City and trying to hack it as artists (of both the visual and con variety). The show stars Bryan Greenberg, Victor Rasuk, Shannyn Sossamon, Luis Guzman and Naked Eye favorite Kid Cudi.

Beat: Bonnaroo 2010 Lineup Announced

Posted by: admin in Untagged  on

The 2010 Bonnaroo lineup was announced today, to the delight of Visene-purchasing college kids nationwide. Over the last eight years, the farmland festival has grown from jam-band earth gathering to jam-packed with the biggest names in the business.  Last year's roster boasted Phish, Bruce Sprinsteen, Public Enemy, Lucinda Williams, TV On The Radio, Beastie Boys, Al Green, Nine Inch Nails and Elvis Costello, among many others.

This year manages to up the ante, rounding up an impressive array of massive artists. While Bonnaroo luminaries Phish are conspicuously absent, djembe-jivin' dread-heads, hacky-sackin' earth jocks and in-spirit Vermonters can get down to the smooth sounds of funky groovesters Dave Matthews Band and the mind-bogglin' bass of Les Claypool.
